The\r\nJudiciary has adopted plea bargaining as one of the reforms to decongest\r\nprisons, where more than 6,000 inmates are awaiting trial before the High\r\nCourt. During plea bargaining sessions, accused persons who want to plead\r\nguilty to charges are given an opportunity in specially tailored sessions to\r\nplead guilty in exchange for reasonable sentences for saving court's time and\r\nshowing genuine remorse for the wrongs committed. Victims of the crimes and the\r\ncommunity are encouraged to participate in the rehabilitation of the offender\r\nby helping the judge to arrive at an appropriate sentence which suits the crime\r\nand the offender.
